Digital time is robot time on the playground clock

We have been practising reading and writing digital time. We use our robot voices and remember the really important points:
To write the hour first and to practice our counting in 5s.
Can you see 7:30 in the photograph below?
Remember to keep reading all the digital time clocks that you see around you at home.

Ash Class Fire of London diaries and architects

Ash class has really enjoyed writing their diaries too -- well done you included loads of amazing detail about escaping down the River Thames, dramas with your families, and working hard to put out the fire with buckets of water.  We also used our measuring skills to be architects to rebuild Tom Farrinor's bakery.

What is a Kenning?

Year Two have been learning about Kennings this week. Can you explain to someone at home what a Kenning is? Here are a few examples of Kenning poems to help you.

See if anyone in your family can think of what would be a good title for these poems?

Tail wagger
Loud barker
Stick fetcher
Meat eater

Chimney climber
Present giver
Sleigh rider
Mince pie eater

Egg sitter
Water diver
Snow lover
Fast swimmer

We have had a go at writing our own today ~ look out for some examples on the blog soon!

Walnut Class Start of the Day - 2nd Dec

Well done for your fantastic diary entries about 'The Day the Emergency Services Came'.
Find your Literacy book on one of the tables.  Can you find something that looks like this?

Can you complete the now task before the register?

Reading Detectives in Walnut Class

Walnut Class have been spending the last few Monday afternoons becoming Reading Detectives!  We complete four different activities over the afternoon and we have all been really enjoying it!

The children work in their reading groups: Gruffalos, Hermiones, BFGS and Elmers.  Each group reads with Mrs Turner, this week we were reading winter poetry.  We practise our reading, talk about what we have read, how we feel about it and hunt for interesting words.  Today in our poems we looked for rhyming words and describing words that made us feel a certain way.

After we have read with Mrs Turner, we complete independent reading detectives activities about what we have just read.  Today we were thinking a lot about the pictures in our head when we read something.

We also work with Mrs Hatcher in the library playing phonics and word games.  Today some of us practised tricky words, some of us played a split digraph game (children can you tell your grown ups what a split digraph is?) and some of us played word jumbles (anagrams).

We also spend some time practising our joined up handwriting.

Each activity takes around 25 minutes, a very busy Monday afternoon!

Helping your child to read and write

Help your child with their reading and writing
Did you know that …

There are 26 letters of the alphabet but they make 44 sounds.
It is essential that all our pupils know these sounds.  It will enable them to become confident readers and spellers.

The link below offers great support and advice for parents and children. It is vital that we teach the children the correct pronunciations. We are finding that the children have many misconceptions, and are making mistakes from Reception right through to Year 6.

Please look at the link below with your child and listen to the pronunciations. You can make a big difference!

Please see your child’s class teacher if you have any questions or would like to learn more.
