What happens to bread and water when we heat it up?

As part of our topic on Fire and the way things can change when they are heated up we observed the changes in bread and water.  The white bread felt squashy and soft at the beginning and then gradually became more crisp and brown the longer we left it in the toaster.  The butter melting also showed us the different reaction to heat from different objects. It also began to smell delicious although we did talk about the horrible smell it can make if it gets burnt. However we didn't want to set off the fire alarms in the classrooms so we didn't get around to burning our toast! We also had a chance to taste the delicious toast as it was too tempting not to put some jam on and have a bit of an early snack before home time!

We also watched the kettle boil up some water listening to the bubbles as they got louder and louder and created the steam which began to rise out of the spout. Mrs Peterson then used a metal spoon to show us how the condensation formed and the steam turned to drips of water again.
We then decided that we would look for condensation back home in the evening especially in the bathroom,
